After the success of The Slam in Surrey and Sussex, it was the turn of Hampshire to take up the baton in 2022. Backed by Hampshire Cricket, what begun with just a Men's competitions that filled the geographical gaps in the midweek offering soon added a Women's competition to supplement the league programme for Division 2 and 3 players that came to an end at the start of August.
Now the Men's competition aims to bring in qualifiers from the many existing regional competitions at the back end of the Summer in order to crown a county-wide short format champion. Whilst on the Women's side of things the concept has been so popular that there is a move to create a higher tier to enable Division 1 players to get involved on midweek evenings as a supplement to their league schedule.
The Slam is doing a different job in Hampshire to what it does elsewhere, but it is no less valuable and with the women's game growing (12 teams in 2024, up from 7 previously) and more interest coming from outside the geographical holes it has plugged on the Men's side, 2025 promises to be the biggest year yet.
