three is the magic number in surrey!
|
The Slam launched in Surrey 7 years ago and we are very proud of the success it has experienced there both in the Men's and Women's competitions, with both having now run under a 2-tier system for a number of years.
However, The Slam's over-arching ethos to provide "More Cricket For More People" prompts the need for advancements to be made to both in order to ensure that they are truly offering an option that gets more people playing the game as well as providing more opportunity for existing players. That's why we are adding a third tier of competition to both! |
WOMEN'S TROPHYOne of the biggest challenges in the female, recreational game is to provide a realistic option that creates an environment where players can feel comfortable giving hard ball cricket a go.
Soft ball cricket has proven to be extremely popular, demonstrating the depth of appetite that exists for the sport, but to make the transition from that to league cricket on a Sunday is a big step. The Slam Women's Trophy seeks to provide an appropriate stepping stone. Capped at players no higher than Division 3; deploying the 8-a-side pairs format used in soft ball; and by condensing fixtures into a festival-style format, The Trophy is a truly inclusive offering that minimises the burden on already swamped playing facilities. Fixtures will be dovetailed with the Division 3 schedule to ensure the availability of players. In order to ensure that Slam cricket is being offered across the full spectrum of hard ball players, and to simplify the short format offering in the county, both the existing Cup and Shield competitions have had a slight tweaking to their eligibility rules in order to make room for the Trophy beneath and to fill the gap left at the top end by the Elite T20 competition that will no longer be run. MEN'S TROPHYThe quality being displayed in the Men's Cup and Shield over recent years has been wonderful to see, and whilst that is very pleasing, what it has done is leave key parts of the cricket family uncatered for, and we are changing that in 2026.
The Slam Men's Trophy is designed to create an environment that is perfect for players, both current and elapsed, that are more focused on playing for the love of the game and the team experience over pushing themselves as far as they can. It is also pitched to be an ideal vehicle for junior players to gain a less intense experience of senior cricket. Player levels are capped at Division 9 (and equivalent) of the Surrey Cricket Championship, and even they are restricted, and with its lower (not out) batter retirement score & maximum overs per bowler, it truly offers a more inclusive playing option, perfect for Clubs to grow their senior memberships. In order to create the space for this new tier, the eligibility levels of the existing Cup and Shield competitions have undergone some necessary changes.
